video

What are some thoughts and feelings you have when watching your own video?
When I was watching my video I didn’t like the silence. You mentioned that you prefer no music but without music my video just seemed dead and boring. I seemed boring, Gavin mentioned you looking like a zombie in your video, well I think I feel the same way. Overall I didn’t really like my video it wasn’t very lively. It was the truth though so I guess that’s how I always look when I’m on the internet.

Would you want your little sister (or future son) to spend a lot of time doing this stuff?
Hell no! My little sister would not be doing this. Although I think being a teenager and doing this is more acceptable. Because younger generation still have the knowledge thing going for them I don’t think spending time on the computer will help them much, they should experience things not view them online.

What do you think of ideas like the Wii that are supposed to make this contrast less stark?
I love the idea of having a Wii, it’s the best of both worlds. For people in life who think kids spend too much inside on video games can finally be at peace. Someone created a good solution for those parents who complain and the kids who live video games. I also feel like the Wii is just the start of interactive technology. I’m not sure what yet but I have a feeling it’s going to continue.

Survey

This question was asked to my Dad.

Q: Since you know me on a personal level, how would you rather me spend my free time?
A: (sum up of answer) My dad basically mentioned the fact that he usually sees me on my computer and that its normal for my generation to always do this. Being that it was the first thing to come out of his mouth I felt like his reaction was more of a regurgitation then a true thought. He later on went into depth about how it doesn’t bother him that I’m frequently on my computer during after school hours because hopefully it’s for school work. He also brought up a good point about how I spend my weekends. He disliked that I spend my majority of the week locked up in school and on my free time I’m still locked up at home instead of going out and doing something more productive.

My Dads comment started off with things that he “referenced from his menu.” The more he thought about it I feel like he started to “cook” his own ideas and come to a valid opinion on the topic.

Bystander #1:

Q: How much do you value your technology?
A: I NEED my cell phone. My job forces me to use my cell phone on a constant basis. I don’t feel the need to use the computer because my cell has everything I need. I would rather be outside, playing sports than inside on the computer any day. My kids would not be allowed to use the computer.

Bystander #2:

Q: How much do you value technology?
A: I really dislike technology, if I could leave it at home I would, a day without it would be relief. My digital world consists of 15 minutes at home and about ½ an hour at work, 2 hours top a week. 4 hours is disgusting. For my future kids I think about ½ an hour a day is allowed and only educated programs are allowed.

Bystander 3:

Q: How much do you value your electronics.
A: I don’t have any electronics, no cell phone or ipod. Only a couple of quarters that I use in case of an emergency. I’m much more of a simpler person. Those need’s don’t seem to affect me as much.

Best Friend:

Q:What can you not leave your house with everyday?
A:Im obsessed with my ipod. Its ushually always in my ears so having it with me every morning is a must. I always also must have my cellphone and money with me. Oh yeah, keys of course.

Q:What happens if you forgot thoes items?
A:I would go crazy! This would never happen because i would always go back home and get them if anything. I always feel the need to know what time it is so having my cellphone comes in handy.

Q:How many hours if too many hours of internet use?
A:I would say past 6 or 7 is way to much. 4 or 5 is ok though.

HW 4 comment 1

Samantha, I enjoyed reading your blog a lot. You have a very casual tone in the way that you write. As I read your blog I felt as though it was like any other conversation that we have. I understand that you don’t view technology as a good or bad thing, much like myself. It seems like you only view 3 things that potentially consume your world. My favorite part of your blog is how you feel tied down by technology, yet music is what fuels you as well.
Your argument about music is extremely relatable to many people in the world. I agree that people do tend to dictate the music they play by the moods they are in; and that’s why during every train ride you may feel the need to play your ipod. As for myself I tend to zone out on the train and music helps make that possible.
There is not much that I would tell you to change about your arguments. I fell they are very strong and help support your argument. I did notice you lacked transitions in the begging of the post of did use them later on. I would like to recommend though that in future blogs you should use transitions into new ideas and get a better opening sentence.
When I first thought of doing this HW assignment I didn’t consider all the different view people could take it. From the discussions in class and reading your post I realized I need to take my view into a smaller account. I approached this topic too broad, reading your blog has made me consider just how much I depend on technology. I too value all my electronics, it might be in a different way but I do. Overall knowing you on a personal level I feel like you truly believe in your arguments. Reading your blog was a pleasure and I look forward to seeing what other new interesting ideas you have to offer.

I’m not quite sure why I was assigned to will since he is not in the class but whatever.
Will, I enjoyed reading your post. I liked the angle that you took. I appreciate your view on the topic. So far from what I have read, you seem to view our unit differently. I also liked how strong your points are.
I cant say you had a main focus to your paper because you ran through topics so frequently. An occurring theme might be that you are fascinated with the speed at which technology is moving. Cell phones in particularly have left a strong impression on you.
I agree that social net working has been taken to new heights. It seems like everyone wants to know when the newest Myspace or facebook is going to come out, even though they all do the same things. I didn’t get the chance to mention that in my blog but I agree a lot with that.
I liked your comment on how people view others internet use, this might be worth expanding. You mention that critics think the internet “dumb’s you down”. Can you visualize the critic’s point of view? What action’s do we take that might allow them to think we are becoming dumber? I also feel as though your first paragraph started off very strong, your second paragraph, however, was a bit more unorganized although I feel you made some very valid points. I like how you have strong opinions but I wish you could go more in depth with them, you sort of just run past them even though they’re so strongly written.
In your first couple of sentences you made me consider new things about this unit that I never thought of. You mentioned that people who do not use the internet frequently, waste their lives as well as the people who do. My dad always complains about my frequent use of the internet and how I’m wasting my life. But to think of it there are not much more exciting things to do in the day regardless of how I spend it. Overall I think you have some very solid ideas as a writer and look forward to reading future posts.

New thoughts and theories

It’s hard for me to understand older people when they look at younger generations and scold our use of technology. I feel as though digitalization has become a part of everyday life. In the morning I make sure I don’t leave the house without my cell phone, ipod, money and keys. Maybe because I have grown up on being digitalized which has become second nature and I no longer think of it as odd, but I honestly don’t see a problem here.
I understand that lots of people spend their days consumed into being digitalized as well as myself. I am usually always connected to something whether it’s my phone that never leaves my hand or on the computer on some website. I actually think that people who are obsessed with technology at a young age could possibly help our future generations; it might result in pushing technology to new heights. I actually do like that even as a child technology has helped me. I grew up hating math and I’m not saying the computer math games helped a lot but they made math semi fun.
Those are some of my thoughts I have on the new unit that. I think being digitalized is neither good nor bad but something that I’m surrounding by every day. I have no major ideas or theories yet because the unit is still very fresh in my head.
